Block Retaining Walls in Atlanta

Block retaining walls, also referred to as segmental retaining walls, are some of the most popular choices among homeowners in Marietta, Smyrna, and Woodstock. They consist of concrete blocks that stack on one another without mortar as a result of its own weight and shape and lock together in order to hold soil back.

Most residential slopes will benefit from this wall type to reflect strength. Moreover, they have the flexibility of colors and textures plus quicker installation time compared to poured concrete or natural stone. Each row of block is aligned to the one below, due to small lips or pins interlocking them. Thus, we take extra care in setting the first row, as all the ones above depend on that one being level and square.

Just like any wall we construct, the block wall begins with gravel compacted below ground level and a layer of drainage gravel behind blocks as we build up. To prevent accumulated water from collecting behind the wall and exerting pressure on it, eventually causing the wall to give way, the wall should have proper draining system. 

Block walls can be effectively utilized for various heights, including a two-foot garden border and a six-foot slope wall. To make the walls taller, we add geogrid, a mesh that is buried in the soil behind the wall that ties the wall back into the hillside. In areas like Woodstock, which has many newer subdivisions built on graded, slopped lots, this is one of the most requested walls we install.

Block retaining walls can also last a long time and require little maintenance, making them a practical option for homeowners who need a durable wall but do not want the added expense of natural stone or poured concrete.

Our Process

• We assess the slope before establishing the necessary wall height and block type or style for your site. 
• A dependable compacted gravel base is installed sub-surface to hold the first course level and stable. 
• The bottom row is set with extra care because every row above it relies on that first course being correct. 
• As we build, we add drainage gravel behind the blocks; this step ultimately determines how long the wall will last. 
• The geogrid reinforcement mesh is periodically placed within taller walls to tether the wall to the hill for added strength.
