Atlanta is built on hilly terrain made up of heavy clay soil that pushes hard against anything attempting to hold it back. Heavy rain here increases that pressure a lot due to cloud cover. If a retaining wall isn't constructed correctly, it will lean, crack, or topple over within a few years. We build every wall with a strong footing, a pipe to drain water, and backfill with gravel, so the wall lasts decades instead of failing early.

We construct retaining walls using various materials, like concrete block, poured concrete, natural stone, brick, and timber. We assist you in selecting the best material for your yard, budget and the height of your slope. If your walls are above 4 feet tall likely you will need an engineer’s drawing a permit from your county and we do that paperwork.

In the Near East Cobb Area, many lots have Backyards with Existing Slopes. As a result, the backyards are not usable unless they are terraced. In the Old 4th Ward and other parts of the city where homes are being renovated, we are often removing walls that are 30 to 40 years old, and that were never built with drainage initially.

3. First, a proper footing trench and compacted gravel base are installed for excavation and footing.
4. Drainage installation   the drainage pipe and gravel backfill are installed before the wall is built up.

6. Final inspection   we will walk the completed project with you and confirm it is code meeting where required.

Areas we serve

We construct, repair, and install retaining walls in East Cobb, the Old 4th Ward, Marietta, Smyrna, Woodstock, Druid Hills, Alpharetta, Roswell, and Decatur. In East Cobb, where the land is hilly, retaining walls have become one of our most requested services. 

Signs that speak of water, rather than slope. Soil floods your driveway after a rainstorm. A slope which loses an inch or two of ground every year. What’s leftover at the bottom of the yard. A mulch-like material but deader than a doorknob! Tree roots that rise above the ground. An area of a yard that is too steep to use for anything.

If you have a wall already, check if the top of the wall has a lean outward, there is a bulging outwards you can see at the middle, cracks opening in a stair-step pattern, or a gap is forming between the soil back of the wall and the wall itself. 

Approximately $25 to $45 for each square foot of surface. Most residential walls come to $10,000 to $34,000. The process of replacing a timber wall that has failed would run you anywhere from $15,000 to $40,000 as demolition and haul-off is included in this price.

The height of the structure is what triggers the number, as anything over about four feet requires engineered plans and a permit. A back yard a mini-excavator cannot reach means hand-carrying block. Drainage which one cannot opt out of and pay what it takes. 

A small garden wall requires three to five days to construct. It will take one to three weeks to fix it. The engineered wall with a height having a permit review would take around three to five weeks including the two to three weeks the county may take on plans. 

The part that most homeowners never hear is that retaining walls almost never fail due to soil weight. They are unsuccessful due to water.

Heavy rain saturates the ground at the back of the wall. The weight of a saturated clay is much more than a dry clay’s weight which means, there is nowhere for the water to drain. As a result, a pressure builds against the wall back. This is the hydrostatic pressure that pushes a wall over. Atlanta receives over fifty inches of rainfall each year. However, it often falls in short heavy bursts. This is the worst possible pattern for wetness.

Gravel backfill, perforated drain pipe, weep holes, and a drain line that runs to daylight are installed in every wall. It's expensive in the beginning. It explains the straightness of our walls by the fifteenth year. 

We work in East Cobb on the steepest residential lots, and there are a lot of timber walls from the 1980s that have reached their life expectancy. Within Old Fourth Ward, people are rebuilding on tight urban lots where access is the challenge and walls do double duty as property lines. Decatur has established trees on slopes, altering the root system determination of our base settings. In Alpharetta newer construction is built on graded lots where the original builder wall was often not drained properly.
