One of the strongest materials you can use outside is stone but you must construct it the right way for Georgia. The soil we have is known as Piedmont clay, and it swells when it rains and shrinks when it dries. Without the right base and drainage, that kind of movement can crack a stone wall. We excavate sufficiently, place gravel and drainage pipe, and stack or mortar the stone so it remains strong for decades, not just a few years.

Metro Atlanta also receives an average of over 50 inchess of rain each year. Water is the number one enemy of exterior stonework. Every stone wall, patio or fireplace we build has a plan to direct the water away, so it never sits against your stone to cause damage.

We offer stone masonry services all through Buckhead, Vinings, Garden Hills, Tuxedo Park, Peachtree Heights, Sandy Springs, Roswell, and Alpharetta. Our team knows the stone and architectural style of established homes in Buckhead and Vinings well. 

Give it a push. Individual stones that tilt or slide have lost their mortar bed. Search for Topping Gaps. Notice the stones that have dropped from a line; dark stains that remain wet a week after the rain. 

The tell is a stone that tips underfoot or grout that has cracked into pieces on flagstone. It often happens when the mortar bed underneath is holding water, so it’s a reset job, not a rebuild.

Examine the bottom edge of the veneer. When there is no gap or weep holes present, water has nowhere to go and will remain against your sheathing.

The cost of stone walls, columns, and steps typically varies between $2,000 and $20,000, depending on their size and the type of stone chosen. The cost of natural stone veneer is typically $15 to $35 per square foot when installed. Patios made with flagstone fall in a similar range.

Manufactured stone is 30% to 50% cheaper than natural stone. When installed correctly, they both work well. If you are on quite a budget, spend it on the installation and not the material. Bad flashing on a natural stone veneer will fail much faster than a manufactured veneer done correctly. 

A stone column or a small wall takes two to four days. A fireplace made of stone in a week. A surface that varies in thickness from about 1.5 to 2 inches. Stone is slower than brick because a lot of individual selection of pieces takes place.

Georgia dirt is sticky; stone is heavy. A stone wall that is built on an inadequate footing will telegraph every bit of that soil movement, and because the stones are irregular, the failure shows up as individual stones getting dropped out of alignment rather than a clean crack.

Moisture is the other factor. The moistness of our summers keeps stone damp for a longer spell than do drier places. This draws minerals to the surface and accelerates mortar breakdown in shady areas. Stone walls in wooded lots -those facing north will need attention sooner. 

Retaining walls, entry columns, terraces are found in Buckhead and Tuxedo Park. Garden Hills is smaller scale and older, where matching fieldstone matters as it gives the street a consistent feel. Because Vinings is on hilly terrain, stone there is typically doing structural work holding a grade, not just facing a wall.
