Brick is one of the most commonly used building materials throughout Atlanta but not invincible. Georgia's clay soil swells during wet months and shrinks during dry months, increasing and decreasing in size. The persistent small-scale movement has stresses on the brick work and mortar joints. This is the reason to cause cracking and loosening of bricks here so much more than elsewhere in the country. Over the years, old mortar becomes weak due to humidity and heavy rain of over 50 inches.

Our Methodology

1. We will talk about brick style, mortar colour and layout to suit your home.
2. To ensure the wall’s long-term stability, a concrete footing below the frost line is installed.
3. Bricklaying requires that the lowest course be laid level and plumb while checking it constantly as the wall goes up.
4. Weep holes are small openings at the base of the building that help let moisture escape.
5. Pillars, caps or decorative coursing are added according to your design.
6. Final walkthrough   we inspect the completed wall together before the job is considered done.

Our brick wall constructions are evident in Virginia Highland, Decatur, Brookhaven, Chastain Park, and all of Metro Atlanta. Virginia Highland is one of the areas that we build new matching brick walls most often as a builder.

Make a scratch in the mortar joint with a house key. If it becomes powdery or crumbles, the joints have failed and need repointing. You're okay for now, if the key barely scratches it.

Other things to look for include brick faces that are flaking or popping off, stair-step cracks in the mortar, a wall bowing outward, and a white chalky residue on the surface. The last one, known as "efflorescence," refers to the formation of white powdery deposits on a wall due to salt brought to the surface through moisture. It indicates that water is permeating through the wall.

Repointing runs about $8 to $15 per square foot. Brick repairs typically land between $500 and $5,000 depending on how much has to come out. New brick walls run $30 to $60 per linear foot.

What pushes it up: height. The same wall costs roughly twice as much at 2nd story level, because scaffolding. What brings it down?Catching it early. A spot repair at ground level is a few hundred dollars. The same wall after five more years of water getting in is a rebuild.

Same day if you consent to move forward, otherwise one to three days. It will take three to seven days to repoint one elevation. A complete brick wall or veneer job will take one to two weeks to complete. Rain delays applications because mortar must set before getting wet. 

Atlanta is tough on brick for two reasons. The rain falls and cold winters constantly, as we got more than fifty inches a year. Come winter, we freeze and thaw dozens of times, which is enough to work water into a joint, freeze it, and then widen the crack a little more each year.

The main problem lies in mortar hardness. Brick which was made around 1950 or older is soft, similarly, it needs a soft lime mortar that can flex with it. High-strength mortar used in construction is stronger than brick. The masonry doesn’t break with heat but the brick does, so it loses the face. We receive many calls to rectify this mistake on homes where someone repointed with incorrect mix. The whole job lies in matching the mortar to the brick, not just details. 

Most of our brick work occurs in Atlanta’s historic districts. Bungalows in Virginia-Highland and Inman Park from the 1910s and 1920s have lime mortar original to the structure that is at the end of its life. Homes in Druid Hills are often larger and more historical. Thus, repairs should match brick and joint profiles. Winnona Park in Decatur contains a great deal of 1920s and 1930s brick, with one bad repointing already.
