Concrete is one of the strongest materials you can build with, but clay soils in Atlanta make it harder to properly install than in many other parts of the country. According to experts in home services, clay soil, which expands when wet and contracts when dry, creates a challenge for builders. How We Work

1. Site assessment   we evaluate your project and review finish and style options.
2. To make sure the area drains properly, the area is excavated and graded.
3. A gravel base that is compacted to prevent settling is installed.
4. Reinforcement refers to the placement of rebar or wire mesh to resist cracking.
5. Concrete is poured, leveled and finished to your specifications.
6. To control cracking, joints will be cut, and the concrete will be cured for the necessary period.

You should repair it if it’s one hairline crack or two in the same area, the slab is level across the crack, the surface is sound.

If you notice that the pavers are dropping and not meeting flush together anymore, if the cracks have become wider than a quarter inch, if the surface is flaking or crumbling in large areas or if you patched the same spot more than twice, then replacement is the answer.

Quick check: stand either side of a crack. The base underneath the ground has failed and resurfacing will not hold if one side moves when you shift your weight.

A driveway takes three to five days. A patio, three to seven. Allow it to cure for seven days at a minimum, ten in cold weather.



Typically, the pour lasts for a single day. All that went before is prep and that’s what matters. 

Every concrete cracks. That's not a flaw. That's physics. Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures and it has to relieve that stress somewhere.

Control joints are incisions made on a schedule to allow movement When cut correctly and on time, your driveway cracks along a straight line you hardly see. When you choose to skip the steps, cracks form wherever they want to. Just so you know, they usually occur diagonally through the middle.

Georgia Presents Two New Complications. The slab’s contact with our clay creates a flexing effect that can cause the driveway to shift. Concrete doesn’t dry. It cures through a chemical reaction that requires moisture. Our humidity slows the curing of concrete. Therefore, a summer slab that is left uncovered ends up baking in the sun, eventually becoming weak at the surface and spalling within a few years.

In Kingsley and The Corners, where mid-century homes have long-outlived their original driveways, we do a lot of concrete work. East Roswell has a newer construction. Builder-grade slabs that were poured thin on graded lots tend to show problems around years 8 to 12.
